Tesla Camping and Road-Trip Setup: Storage, Shade, and Power
Camp Mode plus a Supercharger network makes a Tesla a great road-trip rig. Here is the gear that turns yours into one, without killing range.

A Tesla is a surprisingly good road-trip and camping vehicle: Camp Mode holds a set cabin temperature overnight, the flat folded floor makes a real bed, and Superchargers handle the miles. What it lacks from the factory is storage and shade. Here is how to set yours up.
Carry More Without Killing Range
The frunk and trunk swallow a lot, but bulky gear needs to go up top. An aerodynamic roof cargo box adds 16 cubic feet and is shaped to minimize the wind noise and drag that would otherwise tank your highway range. Pack the heavy, dense items inside the car and save the box for light, bulky gear like sleeping bags and tents.
Range tip: remove the roof box when you are not using it. Even an aero box adds drag, and drag is range on the highway.
Keep the Cabin Organized
Living out of a car for a weekend gets messy fast. A foldable frunk and trunk organizer keeps food, tools, and gear from sliding around, and folds flat when you do not need it. For valuables and a small tool kit, an under-seat storage box keeps them hidden and secure.
Sleep Cooler, Wake Rested
The glass roof is gorgeous and a greenhouse. For overnight stays a glass roof and rear sunshade blocks 99% of UV, drops cabin temperature by up to 15 degrees, and gives you privacy and darkness to actually sleep.
Power and Camp Mode
- Use Camp Mode, not Climate, overnight. It maintains temperature, keeps USB power and the screen live, and disables the alarm and motion sensors so you can sleep.
- Budget the battery. Camp Mode draws roughly 1 to 3 percent per hour depending on outside temperature. Start the night above 50 percent.
- Map your charging. Plan stops around Superchargers and remember that a roof box means more frequent stops.
The Road-Trip Packing List
| Gear | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Roof cargo box | Bulky, light gear up top |
| Trunk and frunk organizer | Keep the cabin livable |
| Glass roof sunshade | Cooler, darker sleep |
| Under-seat storage | Valuables and tools |
| Mattress sized for your model | A real night of sleep |
Set up once and your Tesla goes from commuter to capable weekend basecamp, quiet, climate-controlled, and cheap to run.
